Split rent and bills with roommates, fairly

Rent, energy, internet, groceries, cleaning supplies: sharing a home means a stream of small costs. MySharedXP keeps a running balance for the whole house, so nobody has to remember who bought the toilet paper.

The short answer

Most shared homes split rent by room size or an agreed share, split bills and household supplies equally, and settle up once a month. The fairest method is the one everyone agreed to in advance, written down in one place where everybody can see the running balance.

One group for the whole house

Create a home group and add your roommates. Split rent by room size with shares or exact amounts, split utilities equally, and add groceries whenever someone shops. Balances update for everyone straight away.

Settle up monthly or whenever you like: the settlement plan keeps the number of transfers low, even with five or more housemates.

Splitting rent by room size

When rooms differ, an equal split feels unfair to whoever has the smallest one. A simple method is to split the rent in proportion to each room’s floor area, using shares in MySharedXP. Some houses add a little extra for a private bathroom or a balcony; agree on it once and keep it in the group.

Four fair ways to split rent

There is no single right answer; what matters is that everyone agrees before moving in. These are the methods shared homes use most:

By room sizeRent in proportion to floor areaRooms clearly differ in size
Size plus extrasRoom size, plus an agreed amount for a private bathroom or balconyOne room has something the others do not

Example: one month in a shared flat

Sam pays the rent to the landlord, Lea pays energy and internet (€150) and Max does a big grocery shop (€90). Bills and groceries are split equally. At the end of the month, Sam is owed €1,000, and two transfers settle the month:

Max€90€620Pays €530 to Sam

Agree on a house money routine

A short agreement at move-in prevents most disputes:

  • How rent is split: equally, by room size or by an agreed share
  • Which bills are shared: energy, water, internet, streaming, cleaning supplies
  • Whether groceries are shared or everyone buys their own
  • When you settle up: on a fixed day each month
  • What happens with the deposit and final bills when someone moves out

When someone moves in or out

A new roommate can join the group and share only new expenses, so they never pay for last month’s energy bill. When someone moves out, settle their balance with the settlement plan, then remove them from the group; the history stays visible for everyone who remains.

Handy for shared homes

Questions and answers

How should roommates split rent?
Many houses split rent by room size or by an agreed share and split utilities equally. MySharedXP supports both in the same group: use shares or exact amounts for rent, and an equal split for bills.
Who should pay for shared household costs?
Everyone who benefits, in the proportion you agreed. Costs used by everyone, such as cleaning supplies, toilet paper and internet, are usually split equally; personal items are not shared at all.
How often should roommates settle up?
Once a month works well for most homes, for example right after rent day. The running balance means nobody has to pay back small amounts in between.
What happens when a roommate moves out?
Settle their balance with the settlement plan, then remove them from the group. The history stays visible for everyone who remains.
Can we add rent automatically every month?
Yes, with Pro: a recurring expense adds the rent, or any other fixed bill, every month from the date you choose.
How do we split bills when someone is away for a month?
Agree on it once. Fixed costs such as rent and internet are usually still shared; for variable costs such as groceries, leave the absent roommate out of those expenses while they are away.
How do we handle the deposit?
Record who paid the deposit and keep it out of the monthly balance, because it comes back when you move out. When someone leaves, the person who takes over their room usually pays them their part of the deposit directly.
Is it free for a whole household?
Yes. Every roommate can use all core features for free. Pro is optional per person.
